Though still not nearly as common as the home, auto, and life varieties, pet insurance has become increasingly popular in recent years, growing into a billion-dollar industry in 2017.
Employer-provided pet insurance has also become a more common benefit offering, as companies seek to recruit millennials, who have strong relationships with their pets. It’s a phenomenon that’s nearly four decades in the making.
According to the Insurance Information Institute, North America’s first pet insurance policy was sold by Nationwide in 1982 to provide health coverage to the dog playing Lassie on television.
Embrace has been around for over 15 years and is a leader in the pet insurance industry. Read our complete review for all the information you need to decide if Embrace is the best option for your pet.

About Embrace Pet Insurance
Founded in 2003, Embrace has been in the pet insurance industry for just 15 years, but in that time has established a strong reputation for itself as a comprehensive coverage provider known for fast payouts. The Cleveland-based insurer today has a national footprint, but began life as just a concept when it won the 2003 Wharton Business Plan Competition.
Embrace wrote its first policy in 2006, and six years later partnered with American Modern Insurance Group, an A.M. Best A+ “Superior” rated insurance carrier, to underwrite its policies.
In 2019, the company distinguished itself from the competition by launching the Embrace Pet Insurance mobile app for iOS and Android devices, enabling policyholders to manage their policies anytime, anywhere.

Embrace Pet Insurance Plans
Although the company does not insure birds or exotic animals like some other providers do, Embrace offers very comprehensive coverage for dogs and cats, covering various items not traditionally covered by standard plans, including prosthetic limbs, behavioral therapy, and alternative treatments. The company also offers prescription drug coverage and the aforementioned wellness plan at an additional cost.
Embrace’s industry-exclusive Healthy Pet Deductible also reduces your annual deductible $50 each year that you don’t receive a claim payment, and is included at no additional cost on every pet insurance policy. And though no pet insurance company covers pre-existing conditions, Embrace differentiates itself by distinguishing between curable and incurable pre-existing conditions and covering the former after 12 months of being symptom- and treatment-free.
Dog and Puppy Pet Insurance
Pet owners who sign up for a policy for their dog will get standard accident and illness coverage, along with optional wellness rewards if they so choose.
After a routine waiting period, the policy will go into effect, and their four-legged friend will have lifelong coverage for allergies, broken bones, genetic and hereditary conditions, costly ER visits, cancer, and more.
Waiting periods are as follows:
- Illness: 14 days
- Accidents: 2 days
- Orthopedic: 6 months (can be lowered to 14 days by submitting an orthopedic report card from your vet)
Cat and Kitten Pet Insurance
Policies for cats and kittens are functionally identical to dog and puppy plans. The same waiting periods for lifelong coverage applies, and policyholders have the same opportunities to choose wellness rewards and personalize the level of coverage.
An Embrace cat insurance plan will protect against pricey vet bills associated with diabetes, feline cancer, hyperthyroidism, and other conditions.

Online Application Process With Embrace
To get a free online quote from Embrace, potential policyholders should go to the company’s website and fill out a form that includes information regarding the pet’s name, species, sex, breed, age and whether it is spayed or neutered. You will also be asked to include your zip code and email address.
After submitting those answers, you will be taken to a page where you can customize your accident and illness plan by choosing the annual reimbursement limit (options include a $5,000, $8,000, $10,000, $15,000, or $30,000 limit), the annual deductible ($1,000, $750, $500, $300, or $200) and the reimbursement amount (70%, 80%, or 90%). You also have the option of adding a Wellness Rewards plan, a non-insurance benefit that reimburses for routine care (in amounts of $250, $450, or $650 per year) and can be purchased in addition to your accident and illness plan.
Does Embrace Offer Discounts For Pet Insurance?
Insurance companies will usually try to sell customers on a policy by offering various discounts. Insurers that offer multiple lines of insurance are especially fond of bundling discounts, which allows customers to bundle two or more types of coverage, such as home and auto, and save money on their premiums.
Embrace only insures pets, and therefore has no such bundling discount, but does special savings for those who enroll multiple pets, along with a fairly impressive list of other discounts.
There are a handful of discounts available in only New York, Rhode Island, and Washington state that interested parties should check out on Embrace’s website.
Embrace Company Reviews and Customer Service
Embrace is one of the highest rated pet insurers in the industry. Consumer’s Advocate gives Embrace pet insurance a score of 8.8 out of 10, indicating “excellent” coverage. That rating was strongly influenced by the very positive customer feedback Embrace has received, despite the fact that plans are a bit pricier on average.
Embrace has been accredited by the Better Business Bureau since 2006, and currently boasts a perfect A+ BBB Rating. The insurer has an average of just one out of five stars from BBB customer reviews, but that number based on only 20 reviews.
