Medjet Review: Updated for 2024 with Covid Info
Medjet is one of North America’s leading providers of global air medical transport and travel security protection for residents of the U.S., Canada, or Mexico.
The Birmingham, Alabama, firm was founded in 1987. It arranges, and pays for, medical transport to a home hospital for members who are hospitalized more than 150 miles from home (it works domestically as well as internationally). Most travel insurance and credit card medical evacuation benefits only get you to the “nearest acceptable facility,” Medjet gets its members to a home hospital of their choice. Their security memberships also provide access to 24/7 crisis response line, with teams on the ground to help if a members safety is threatened.
The company offers multiple service plans at a wide range of price points, so even travelers on a budget can afford to be members.
Update: As of 2021
Medjet now offers Covid-19 medical transportation within the continental US, Canada, Mexico, and the Caribbean. To learn more about Covid medical transport please see here.

Why Use Medjet?
Over the decades, Medjet has earned an impressive list of partners such as the NFL and luxury travel agencies, including Virtuoso and Signature.
It holds an A+ rating from the Better Business Bureau (BBB) while the underwriter, Lloyd’s of London, has earned straight A’s from rating firms Standard and Poor’s and A.M. Best.
In this article, we’ll take a deep dive into Medjet’s plans, membership levels, customer service offerings, and overall reputation.
Medjet Insurance Plans
Medjet Travel Protection offers a range of plans that cover transport during medical emergencies and support services during security risks.
Unlike traditional travel insurance plans, Medjet does not cover medical expenses, but rather the costs associated with ground and air ambulance transfer to a hospital at home, and security evacuations, when traveling outside of your home country (U.S., Canada, or Mexico). (For more information, read our “Best Air Ambulance Insurance“).
It provides two primary services: a medical transport only package and one that includes both medical transport benefits as well as the security and crisis response services. Medjet offers both plans at six different membership levels, catering to everyone from young adults to retirees.
Medjet doesn’t provide any trip cancellation or trip interruption reimbursement. Travelers may want to buy a comprehensive policy from another carrier to cover these scenarios as well as baggage loss and medical expenses.
MedjetAssist
MedjetAssist travel insurance is tailored to consumers who only need coverage for transport during medical emergencies. This plan is available for individuals, families, and businesses. It covers all transport expenses to a home hospital of choice for those hospitalized while traveling anywhere that’s at least 150 miles from home.
Annual and short-term plans are available, with a specific membership type for travelers over age 75. Members can be transported to a home hospital of their choice whether they are in a neighboring state or across the world.
MedjetHorizon
The MedjetHorizon plan has all the same medical transport benefits as the MedjetAssist membership, plus provides access to renowned corporate security provider FocusPoint International’s Crisis Assistance Plus service. In the event of non-medical crises such as terrorism, violent crime, disappearance, wrongful detention, pandemics, kidnapping, and natural disasters, FocusPoint’s trained experts step in to provide help.
It’s important to note that the MedjetHorizon plan covers support services, but not associated costs like kidnapping payments or lost property in a natural disaster.
Travelers who are MedjetHorizon members can also receive a $60,000 cash advance for use in medical emergencies. This could be critical if down payments are required or credit cards are not accepted for medical care while traveling.
Membership Options
Whether you are traveling for personal pleasure, or have work travel coming up, Medjet offers membership options that will suit your needs:
Short Term
The Medjet Short Term package includes 8, 15, 21 and 30-day options for individuals and families with up to five dependents. Members can choose the short-term MedjetAssist plan on its own, or the company now offers Short-Term MedjetHorizon memberships in the same incremental options. The coverage only lasts for the specified term.
This option could be a great choice for travelers who want Medjet protection for a short trip. These plans are only available for travelers under 75.
Annual
Medjet’s Annual travel coverage is available for individuals, families, and groups under the age of 75 living in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico.
With the Annual plan, consumers have unlimited coverage for travel within their home country and for international trips lasting no more than 90 consecutive days. Annual plans are available for terms of one, two, three, and five years.
Diamond
The Diamond plan opens the MedjetAssist and MedjetHorizon coverage to travelers between 75 and 85 years of age. Those planning to enroll need to contact Medjet for a quote, submit a general health questionnaire, and a physician-certified medical statement. The Diamond plan is currently only available as a one-year annual package.
Collegiate
The Collegiate option is a great choice for students and teachers who will be studying or teaching abroad for longer than 90 consecutive days, but not moving permanently. With this option, Medjet offers Assist and Horizon coverage for one-year terms and covers individuals’ foreign trips for up to 20 consecutive weeks. To qualify, prospective customers must be actively studying or teaching and younger than 75 years old.
Expatriate
Medjet offers the Expatriate plan for those who plan to travel abroad for longer than 90 consecutive days. This plan is good for one year, and has two levels of coverage for trips lasting up to 180 days or a full year. The Expatriate could be an excellent choice for individuals under 75 who need extended travel coverage for long-term work assignments or once-in-a-lifetime trips.
Domestic
Though Medjet offers excellent coverage for international trips, it also has the Domestic plan for travelers staying within their home country. This plan has the same emergency transport benefits as other Medjet plans, but saves money by limiting coverage.
This annual policy is available for individuals under 75 living in the U.S. and traveling within the contiguous 48 states.
Motorcycle Coverage
Medjet offers motorcycle shipping coverage as an add-on to any of its plans except the Diamond package. With supplemental motorcycle coverage, Medjet will arrange, and pay up to $3,500, to have a member’s motorcycle shipped home in the event of a hospitalization.
Corporations and Organizations
Medjet offers plans that currently protect thousands of corporations, entertainers, business leaders, educational institutions, mission organizations, associations, and sports figures. It’s your duty of care to protect those important to your organization while they travel, and there are plan options for whatever your needs may be.
Medjet Travel Protection Costs
Medjet membership is available in a wide range of prices depending on the plan. Pricing for Medjet varies according to the following:
- Type of Coverage
- Trip Length
- Age
While Medjet doesn’t charge more for travel to specific countries, it does have exclusions for areas with level three and four travel advisories from the U.S. State Department.
Annual plans from Medjet offer very competitive prices when compared with other policies on the market. Since Medjet only provides coverage for emergency transport and crisis support, it’s able to offer annual plans that start at less than $99 for individuals.
Medjet Reviews
Medjet has been in business since 1987 and has been BBB-accredited since 2015, with a perfect A+ grade and a five-star rating. As with most travel insurance providers, there are some negative comments about Medjet on popular travel sites, but those seem to be users looking for exceptions to Mejet’s rules, and user transport reviews are largely positive.
The company has established a strong partnership with AARP. All current AARP members have access to a 20% discount on both Assist and Horizon packages.
Customer Assistance Services
Medjet offers easy, 24/7 customer access through toll-free phone lines, email, an exclusive web portal, and digital ID cards. With these cards, members can quickly access all of their account details, including their plan’s expiration date, and contact Medjet directly over the phone.
Medjet’s Personal Travel Advisories are one of the company’s unique features. This service allows MedjetHorizon customers to access a research library of information on over 260 countries, and create custom bulletins based on a travel itinerary. Personalized advisories including government warnings and local laws can be scheduled for email delivery as you travel.
Medjet is a niche service within the travel insurance industry. The company has access to a global network of hundreds of air ambulances, flight crews, and medical and security personnel to ensure that all transports are safe and efficient. Flights and ground transports are routed through 50 different dispatch locations worldwide, so plan-holders are rarely out of reach.
Financial Stability
Regardless of customer reviews and reputation, an insurance provider is only as reliable as its financial backers. This can be especially true of travel insurance, as travel emergencies can have costly logistics specific to the industry. In the most critical moments, an insurer must have reliable underwriters that are ready to quickly deliver large sums of money.
Medjet is backed by Lloyd’s of London, who has been continuously operating as an insurance underwriter since the 1600s. Lloyd’s currently holds an A+ rating from Standard and Poor’s as well as an A rating from AM Best. With such a solid financial background, Medjet users can rest assured that they’ll get the funding they need when it counts the most.
